WHAT IS JIVAMUKTI YOGA?

JIVAMUKTI YOGA IS A PATH TO ENLIGHTENMENT THROUGH COMPASSIONFOR ALL BEINGS. THE JIVAMUKTI METHOD IS GROUNDED IN THE ORIGINAL MEANING OF THE SANSKRIT WORD ASANA AS “SEAT, CONNECTION” – RELATIONSHIP TO THE EARTH. EARTH IMPLIES ALL OF LIFE.

Citing Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra, which states that asana should be sthira and sukham, Jivamukti Yoga maintains that one’s relationship to others (asana) should be mutually beneficial and come from a consistent (sthira) place of joy and happiness (sukham). This is a radical idea that, when put into practice, can dismantle our present culture, which is based on the notion that the Earth and all other animals exist for our benefit and to be exploited for our own selfish purposes. So the practice of asana becomes more than mere physical exercise to keep one’s body fit or to increase strength or flexibility; it becomes a way to improve one’s relationship to all others and thus lead to enlightenment – the dissolution of the sense of separateness, the realization of the oneness of being, the discovery of lasting happiness.

Studio Etiquette

It’s completely natural to be nervous when going anywhere for the first time, but we know that our inclusive Mt. Dora Yoga community will make you feel right at hOMe right away. Whether you’re new to yoga or just new to our studio, here is everything you need to know to make your experience a pleasant one for you and your classmates.

Before You Arrive

Please use good hygiene and dress modestly. Ensure that both you and your mat are clean before practice.

Please no perfumes, oils or body scents. Many people are sensitive or allergic to smells.  We want everyone to have the freedom to breathe fully.

It’s best to practice on an empty tummy or have just a light snack 1-2 hrs before class.

You may want to write your name somewhere on your mat in case you leave it behind. This happens more often than you think!

Arrive Early

Allow yourself time to check in at the front desk, stow your belongings, and set up your practice spot. It’s always nice to have a few moments to spare to slow your breathing and set an intention for your practice while you wait for class to begin.

The doors close promptly at class. We know traffic can be a problem, and we do our best to get all students into class. However, we try to avoid opening the doors once class has begun as it can be disruptive.

Leave Belongings behind the desk

We have created a secure space behind our check-in desk as well as  entry and exit doors are locked at all times.  Please only take what you need with you into the practice area as space is somewhat limited.

We ask that NO cell phones be brought into the practice space. Please turn off or silence your cell phone and any other electronic device that makes a sound (vibrate should be turned off as well) and leave them with your belongings.

Remove your shoes before entering the practice space. In addition to respecting our practice space, this helps keep our floors clean and protected.

Props

Bring your own mat if you have one. If you have rented a studio mat, please return it to the front desk after class.

If you’ve used blocks, straps, or blankets, please place them back in the prop cabinet the way you found them.

Practice

Practice with an open heart and an open mind, allowing yourself to participate fully in this time you have set aside.

Shavasana/relaxation is important. If you must leave class early, position yourself near the door and leave quietly BEFORE everyone else is in relaxation. It is best to sit or lie quietly on your mat for 5 minutes or so before leaving.
